Indication of Nicotinell Chewing Gum Nicotinell without sugar is treatment for tobacco addiction to relieve withdrawal nicotine symptoms among adults that want to stop their tobacco consumption. Although stopping definitively is better, Nicotinell can help in: - in the case of a smoker temporary giving up, - a strategy to reduce the tobacco intake as a way to giving up altogether. How to take this drug How to use Orally. The nicotine contained in the gum becomes active once you start chewing the gum, it is then absorbed into the mouth. If the nicotine is swallowed with the saliva it has no effect It is therefore important not to chew the gum too much. Stages: - chew the gum until the taste is strong. - put the gum against your inside cheek for approximately 10 minutes. - when the taste disappears, chew again. - alternate between chewing and pauses for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the chewing gum will no longer release any nicotine. Dosage The chewing gum is not suitable for heavy or very heavy smokers (Fagerstrom test showed 7/10 for those smoking more than 20 cigarettes per day). Stop smoking Treatment is normally done in two phases. 1 st phase: Chew the gum every time you want to smoke. The number of chewing gum pieces is generally 8-12 per day and should not exceed more than 20 per day. The length of this stage is approximately 3 months but can vary depending on the individual. 2 nd phase: When you no longer have the feeling of wanting to smoke, reduce the number of chewing gum pieces per day. Treatment should stop when you are only having 1-2 pieces per day. It is not recommended to take the chewing gum after 12 months. If you still feel like smoking during treatment or after treatment has stopped, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR. Your doctor might advise you to combine the Nicotinell chewing gum with the Nicotinell patches. Temporary tobacco Abstinence Chew the gum every time you want to smoke. The number of chewing gum pieces is generally 8-12 per day and should not exceed more than 20 per day. Reducing Tobacco Consumption Alternate the chewing gum and cigarettes. Chew the gum every time you feel like smoking to reduce the overall consumption of cigarettes. The number of chewing gum pieces varies depending on your needs. However do not exceed more than 30 pieces per day. If your cigarette consumption has not decreased after 6 weeks of treatment it is recommended to consult a health professional. Reducing the tobacco content gradually leads to complete stop in tobacco. This should be done as early as possible in the 6 months following treatment. If in the 9 months since the beginning of treatment you have not stopped smoking, it is recommended to consult a health professional. It is not recommended to take the chewing gum after 12 months. To increase the chances of not taking tobacco it is important to reduce consumption by 50% during this phase. The Nicorette chewing gum helps achieve this objective before stopping completely. Length of treatment Duration is capped at 12 months. Composition of Nicotinell Active ingredient (per chewing gum): Nicotine: 2 mg Under the form of nicotine-polacriline. Precautions of Use of Nicotinell In the event of recent myocardial infarction, unstable or worsening angina (including Prinzmetal angina), severe heart rhythm disorder, unstable arterial hypertension or recent stroke, always recommend initially a complete cessation of tobacco consumption without nicotine replacement therapy. If these nicotine-dependent smokers fail, the use of NICOTINELL FRUIT 2 mg chewing gum can be considered; however, since clinical safety data in these patients are limited, initiation of treatment should be done only under medical supervision. Use NICOTINELL Chewing Gums carefully in patients with arterial hypertension, stable angina, cerebrovascular disorder, occlusive peripheral arterial disease, heart failure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or pheochromocytoma, or hepatic or renal insufficiency severe. Stopping treatment without any nicotine substitution should be recommended first for patients wanting to stop smoking. Swallowing nicotine may exacerbate symptoms in patients with oesophagitis, oral or pharyngeal inflammation, gastritis or gastric ulcer. Doses of nicotine tolerated in smoking adults can cause severe or fatal poisoning in young children (see section 4.9). Dental prosthesis wearers may have difficulty chewing the gum: in this case, it is recommended to use another form of nicotine replacement. Cautions linked to the excipients: This drug contains sorbitol. Therefore, patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance should not take this medication. Nicotinell contains 0.2g of sorbitol (E420) with a fructose content of 0.04g per gum. Each piece of gum contains 1kcal. This medication contains 11.50 mg of sodium per chewing gum. This medication contains hydroxytoluene (E321) which can cause irritations in the mouth. Contraindications Do not take Nicotinell fruit chewing gum in the following cases: - if you do not smoke or smoke occasionally. - if you are allergic to one of its components. Pregnancy and breast feeding Pregnancy: It is very important to stop smoking during pregnancy for you and the baby. Nicotine substitute treatments during pregnancy need medical consent. You must consult a health professional during pregnancy if you have tobacco withdrawal symptoms. Breast feeding: If you smoke a lot or are not thinking about stopping you should not breast-feed your child. The use of this medication is not recommended during breast-feeing as nicotine passes into human milk. However if you want to stop smoking and breast-feed your child, seek medical advice first. Pharmacist advice It is important to follow the protocol of the chewing gum. Smokers who want to stop tend to use the chewing gum. By using it in this way, nicotine does not pass completely into the bloodstream and therefore is not effective enough. The relapse is often due to too much weight gain, lack of gestures and lack of encouragement from the people around you (see tolerance). To avoid gaining weight due to stopping smoking, if you have a lack of “cigarette” gesture and you do not know what to do with your hands, we advise you to drink a large glass of water, to eat an apple, exercise and occupy your hands with a pencil. Ask your friends to not smoke around you, in the house, office or in the car. Knowing how difficult it is to stop your friends and family should respect your decision.
