History and origin
The name Onyx comes from the Greek "Onyx", which means "claw" or "kind of agate" in Latin. Queen Victoria popularised the stone in the 1800s. She wore the black crystal for almost 40 years. The most important onyx deposits are in Mexico, the United States and India.
