Indication UPSA Aspirin 500 mg Effervescent Tablets can be used: – to relieve pain and fever (e.g. headaches, flu-like conditions, toothache and other pain), in which case they are suitable for adults and children over 30 kg (110.2 pounds / 7.9 stone) in weight. – to treat certain forms of rheumatism, in which case they are suitable for adults and children over 20 kg (110.2 pounds / 7.9 stone) in weight. For children who weigh less, other aspirin medicines are available; ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Directions for Use To be taken orally. Dissolve in a large glass of water and drink immediately. Dosage To treat pain or fever: Suitable for adults and children weighing more than 30 kg (110.2 pounds / 7.9 stone; typically ages 9 and over). – Adults and children over 50 kg (approximately 15 years and over): 3 grams of aspirin (6 tablets) per day. Take 1 tablet, repeating if necessary no sooner than 4 hours later. If your pain or fever is more serious, take 2 tablets initially, repeating if necessary no sooner than 4 hours later, for a maximum of 6 tablets per day. – Elderly people: 2 grams of aspirin (4 tablets) per day. Take 1 tablet, repeating if necessary no sooner than 4 hours later. If your pain or fever is more serious, take 2 tablets initially, repeating if necessary no sooner than 4 hours later, for a maximum of 4 tablets per day. – Children between 30 and 50 kg (approximately 9-15 years): Dosage dependent on weight. Ages provided as a guide only. Weigh your child carefully to ensure that they receive the correct dose. Many doses of aspirin are available, allowing you to choose the one best suited to your child's weight. The recommended dose is approximately 60 milligrams per kilogram per day, administered in 4 to 6 doses (i.e. approximately 15 mg/kg every 6 hours or 10 mg/kg every 4 hours). ––Children between 30 and 40 kg (approximately 9-13 years): 1 tablet per dose, repeated every 6 hours if necessary, for a maximum of 4 tablets per day. ––Children between 41 and 50 kg (approximately 12-15 years): 1 tablet per dose, repeated every 4 hours if necessary, for a maximum of 6 tablets per day. To treat rheumatism: Suitable for adults and children weighing more than 20 kg (110.2 pounds / 7.9 stone; typically ages 15 and over). Use as prescribed by your doctor. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Frequency of Doses To treat pain or fever: Regular doses help to stop pain and fever repeatedly coming and going. Leave at least 4 hours between doses. For children weighing more than 30 kg (approximately 9 years old), doses must be taken at regular intervals, including during the night. To treat rheumatism: Leave at least 4 hours between doses. Length of Treatment To treat pain or fever: – 5 days (for pain relief); or – 3 days (for fever relief). – If your pain persists for more than 5 days, or your fever for more than 3 days; or if your condition worsens: discontinue treatment and consult your doctor. To treat rheumatism: Use as directed by your doctor. Ingredients Per tablet: Active Ingredient: Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin): 500.0 mg Other Ingredients: Sodium bicarbonate, anhydrous citric acid, anhydrous monosodium citrate, anhydrous sodium carbonate, aspartame, polyvidone, polyvinylpolypyrrolidone, orange flavour*. *Composition: Orange essential oil, orange juice from concentrate, acetaldehyde, ethyl butyrate, citral, aldehyde C-6 (hexanal), linalol, terpineol, ethyl acetate, purified and atomised gum arabic, maltodextrin, glucose. Contains 388.5 mg / 16.9 milli-equivalents of sodium per tablet. Packaging This medicine is made as an effervescent tablet and sold in packs of 20. Precautions for Use Consult your doctor or pharmacist if: – you are trying to treat pain or fever in a child weighing under 30 kg (approximately 9 years old), as the dose will need to be tailored to their weight; or – you are trying to treat rheumatism in a child weighing under 20 kg, as the dose will need to be tailored to their weight. – If your pain persists for more than 5 days, or your fever for more than 3 days; or if this medicine is too weak; or if you develop any additional symptoms: discontinue use and consult your doctor. – Even in very small doses, aspirin increases and significantly prolongs (by several days) the risk of bleeding. If you are shortly to undergo surgery (even a minor procedure), consult your doctor, surgeon, anaesthetist or dentist as appropriate before using this medicine. – If taking in large doses to treat rheumatism, be aware of the common signs of overdose: e.g. buzzing in the ears, hearing loss and disorientation. If any of these signs appear, SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE IMMEDIATELY. – Aspirin changes the levels of uric acid in the blood. – Contains sodium (388.5 mg per tablet). Use with caution if you are on a strict low-salt diet. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Contra-indications Do NOT use if you: – are allergic to aspirin or any of this medicine's other ingredients; – have phenylketonuria (PKU), a hereditary disorder diagnosed at birth – this medicine contains aspartame; – have a history of asthma attacks caused by use of aspirin or similar medicines (particularly non-steroidal anti-inflammatories); – are in the third and final trimester of pregnancy; – have a developing stomach or duodenal ulcer; – suffer from haemorrhagic disease (bleeding) or are at risk of bleeding; – have severe liver disease; – have severe kidney disease; – have severe heart disease; – are taking methotrexate in doses greater than 15 mg per week; or – are taking oral anti-coagulants and plan to use aspirin in large doses (especially in order to treat rheumatism). Use by Women who are Pregnant or Breast-Feeding If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any form of medicine. Pregnancy – If you are in the first or second trimester of pregnancy, your doctor may prescribe this medicine for sporadic use. – NEVER use this medicine during the third and final trimester of pregnancy. Even a single dose may be harmful to your baby (and in particular, their cardiopulmonary and kidney health). Your cardiologist or gynaecologist may nevertheless, in certain cases, prescribe very weak doses of aspirin much smaller than those used in the treatment of pain and fever. In such cases, take aspirin STRICTLY as prescribed by your doctor. Breast-feeding Since aspirin passes into breast milk, you are advised NOT to use this medicine if breast-feeding.
