Description
MACROGOL 4000 EG contains the active substance macrogol 4000 and belongs to a group of medicines known as osmotic laxatives. It increases the amount of water in faeces, helping to resolve problems associated with slow intestinal transit. MACROGOL 4000 EG is not absorbed into the bloodstream and is not modified in the body. MACROGOL 4000 EG is indicated for the treatment of constipation in children aged between 6 months and 8 years. This medicine comes in the form of a powder that should be dissolved in a glass of water and drunk. Its effects generally appear within 24 to 48 hours. The treatment of constipation with medication must be combined with healthy lifestyle habits and a healthy diet.
How to take this medicine
When taking MACROGOL 4000 EG, always follow the instructions in this leaflet or the advice of your doctor or pharmacist. If in doubt, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage and frequency of administration
The usual recommended dosage depends on your child's age.
- 6 months to 1 year: 1 sachet a day.
- From 1 to 4 years: 1 or 2 sachets a day.
- From 4 to 8 years: 2 to 4 sachets a day.
Dissolve the contents of the sachet in a glass of water (at least 50 ml) immediately before giving it to your child to drink. If only 1 sachet is sufficient, give the medicine to your child in the morning. If more than 1 sachet is required, give the medicine to your child in the morning and evening.
In children aged over 1 year, the daily dose should be adapted to the effect obtained.

Precautions for use
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking MACROGOL 4000 EG. Cases of allergic reactions manifested by a rash on the skin and swelling of the face or throat (angioedema) have been reported in adults after taking medicines containing macrogol (polyethylene glycol). Isolated cases of severe allergic reactions leading to loss of consciousness, collapse or breathing difficulties and feelings of general malaise have been reported. If your child presents any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately. An organic cause must be ruled out before initiating treatment; contact your pharmacist or doctor before administering this medicine.
As this medicine may sometimes cause diarrhoea, contact your doctor or pharmacist before giving this medicine if your child:
- has impaired renal or hepatic function,
- is taking diuretics (medicines that increase urinary elimination) as your child is likely to have reduced blood levels of sodium (salt) and potassium.
MACROGOL 4000 EG may be taken during pregnancy and while breast-feeding. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
