What SMecta is and what it is used for: Other intestinal adsorbents (A: digestive tract and metabolism). This drug is indicated in symptomatic treatment of: -Acute diarrhoea in children and infants in addition to oral rehydration and in adults; -Chronic diarrhoea (long-term diarrhoea); -Pain associated with digestive disorders affecting the oesophagus, stomach and/or intestine. What you need to know before you take Smecta: If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to particular sugar(s), contact him or her before taking this drug. Never take Smecta: if you are allergic to diosmectite or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine. Take care when using Smecta in the following cases: this medicine contains two sugars (glucose and saccharose). Its use is not recommended in patients with fructose intolerance, glucose or galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase / isomaltase deficiency (rare hereditary diseases). This medicine must be used with caution in case of history of severe constipation. If the disorders does not disappear within 7 days, consult your doctor. If pain is associated with a high temperature or vomiting, consult your doctor immediately. In children and infants, acute diarrhoea must be treated in conjunction with early administration of an oral rehydratation solution (ORS), to avoid dehydration. This treatment is supplementary to dietary rules: -Ensure rehydration with plenty of salty or sweet drinks, to compensate for fluid loss due to diarrhoea (the average daily water requirement in an adults is 2 litres). -Maintain food intake while the diarrhoea persists, but excluding some foods, especially raw vegetables and fruit, grren vegetables, spicy dishes as well as frozen foods or drinks. -Prefer grilled meat and rice. Other medicines: To avoid reducing the efficacy of the other treatments, you should take Smecta at distance from any other medication. Tell your doctor or your pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without medical prescription. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: This medication will only be used during pregnancy if your doctor advices it. If you find that you are pregnant during the treatment, consult your doctor and he will assess whether or not you should continue the treatment. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Ask your docto or your pharmacist before taking any medicine. Dosage: *Treatment of acute diarrhoea: -In infants and children: - up to 1 year: 2 packets a day for 3 days, then 1 packet a day. - 1 year and older: 4 packets a day for 3 days, then 2 packets a day. -In adults: on average, 3 packets a day. In practice the daily dose can be doubled at the start of treatment. *Other indications: -In infants and children : - up to 1 year: 1 packet a day - Between 1 and 2 years: 1 to 2 packets a day - 2 years and older: 2 to 3 sachets a day Method and route of administration: Oral route. The contents of the packet must be mixed into a liquid to form a suspension, just before use. In children and infants: the content of the packet can be mixed in a feeding bottle of 50 ml of water to be given at intervals during the day, or mixed with a semi-liquid food, such as broth, compote, puree, baby food... In adults: the content of the packet can be mixed into half a glass of water. Take preferably this medicine after meals in case of other indications. Possible side effects: Like all medicines, Smecta can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. -Constipation, usually resolving with the reduction of the dose, but that may in rare cases lead to treatment being stopped, -Flatulence, -Vomiting. During post-marketing experience, very rare cases of allergic reactions including urticaria, rashes, pruritis and angio-oedema have been reported. Cases of constipation worsening have also been reported. Contents of Smecta: The active substance is: Diosmectite: 3.00 g For one packet of 3.76 g. The other components are: glucose monohydrate, sodium saccharine, orange flavor, vanilla flavour. Composition of orange flavour: maltodextrin, saccharose, arabic gum (E414), mono- and diacetyltartric esters of mono- and diglycerides of fatty acides (E 472e), silicium dioxide (E551), orange flavour. Composition of vanilla flavour: maltodextrin, saccharose, glyceryl triacetate (E1518), silicium dioxide, (E551), ethyl alcohol, soya lecithin (E322), vanilla flavour.
