It was introduced by the Spanish and it was only in the 19th century that its cultivation spread mainly to Madagascar, Reunion Island, Mauritius and Tahiti. The method of fertilizing the flower, which resembles an orchid, was quite original since it was discovered in Mexico that it was an insect which carried out this function by gathering from flower to flower... From now on, fertilization is carried out manually using using a small spatula from flower to flower as well. The fruit or pod is then removed, dried and brewed for many weeks to prevent the pods from being damaged by humidity.
