Botanical information
Gaultheria fragrantissima Botanical family: Ericaceae Producer organ: leaves Chemotype: methyl salicylate
Major properties
Tremendously anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antispasmodic, wintergreen relieves all muscle and joint pain caused by intense effort or not: sprains, tendinitis, cramps, back pain, lumbago, stretching, as well as rheumatism. It works wonders to prepare the muscles for effort and relieve aches after sports. It is also characteristic of sports halls, locker rooms and physiotherapists' offices.
Main indications
Pain associated to sport or other physical exertion (tendonitis, tennis elbow, golf elbow, sciatica, lumbago, pulled muscles, strained muscle, shock, sprain, achy muscles, bad back, cramps, inflammations, arthritis, polyarthritis) Rheumatisms, gout, pain linked to old age (osteoarthritis) Inflammation due to small repeated movements (typing on a computer or a cash desk...) Neuralgia Headache (digestion problem or bad circulation)
How to use
For all pains: Apply some drops onto the painful area, always diluting it in vegetable oil (Arnica or Hypericum if possible) - 2 drops of Gaultheria for every 10 drops of vegetable oil.
Headache: Apply the same mixture onto the temples.
Aches (prevention and treatment): dilute 2 drops of wintergreen essential oil in 10 drops of arnica vegetable oil and apply in massages before and after exercise.
Sprain or traumatic contusion: dilute 2 drops of wintergreen essential oil + 2 drops of helichrysum essential oil in 5 drops of arnica vegetable oil, apply in light massages, twice a day, for a week.
Other uses Damaged liver, hepatitis Put 1 drop on a neutral tablet and swallow, or 1 teaspoon of olive oil, let it dissolve in your mouth twice a day for 21 days. Have a break for 1 week and start again if needed. Other uses This typical Gaultheria smell is often in athletes changing rooms. There is nothing more normal than applying this oil before (to warm-up the muscles) and (to reduce the lactic acid) after sport.
Contraindication
You must always dilute the Gaultheria in vegetable oil before applying onto the skin, except if it is on a very confined area for example on the knee. In this case, you can use the essential oil in its pure form, 2-3 drops applied onto the finger. This essential oil is not allowed during pregnancy or breast feeding. It is also not advised for children younger than 7 years of age.
