The name "Malachite" comes from the Latin "molochītis" meaning "stone of Malachy", in reference to the region of Malachy, formerly situated at the level of the Dead Sea. A major source of malachite in ancient times. Malachite has been used since ancient times, notably by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, to make jewellery, amulets and sculptures. The world's main malachite deposits are located in Zambia, Australia and Russia.
