History and origin
The name "tourmaline" comes from the Sinhalese word "turmali", meaning "stone that attracts ashes", in reference to the stone's property of electrically charging ashes. In the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors discovered tourmaline deposits in Brazil. The stone was then exported to Europe, where it became very popular with royalty and the nobility. The world's main deposits are located in Angola, Madagascar and Thailand.
