Product Description Strepsils lozenges can be used to relieve mild and feverless sore throat, mouth ulcers (aphthae) and small mouth sores. Suitable for ages 6 years and over. Contains a local anaesthetic with analgesic properties (lidocaine) and antiseptics with antibacterial properties. Ingredients Active Ingredients: Lidocaine hydrochloride, amylmetacresol, 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol Excipients: Peppermint essential oil, anise essential oil, levomenthol, indigotin, Quinoline Yellow WS, sodium saccharin, tartaric acid, sucrose solution, liquid glucose Directions for Use Take 1 lozenge every 2 to 3 hours. DosageTake lozenges between meals. – Adults: Suck 1 lozenge slowly, without chewing. Repeat every 2 hours, if necessary, for a maximum of 8 lozenges per day. – Children 6 to 15 years: Suck 1 lozenge slowly, without chewing. Repeat every 2 hours, if necessary, for a maximum of 4 lozenges per day. Length of TreatmentDo not use for more than 5 days. If your symptoms persist, consult your doctor. Precautions for Use If using for sore throat:If you develop a fever, start to cough up purulent sputum, or experience difficulty swallowing; or if your condition persists or worsens after 5 days: consult your doctor. If using for mouth ulcers or sores:If the injury is extensive or grows, or you develop a fever: SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE IMMEDIATELY. Contains sucrose (2.5 g per tablet). Use with caution if you are diabetic or on a low-sugar diet. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Contra-indications In general, there is no benefit in combining two or more antiseptics. Check that any other medicines that you are currently using do not contain antiseptics. Do NOT use if you are allergic to local anaesthetics or any of this medicine's other ingredients. Anaesthesia of the throat can increase your choking risk while eating. Therefore: – children under 12 should be supervised while taking this medicine; and – this medicine should not be taken shortly before eating or drinking. Prolonged use of this medicine (for a period of more than 5 days) can alter the natural bacterial balance of the mouth and throat. Do not exceed the stated dose. If taken repeatedly, or in large amounts, this medicine may pass into the bloodstream and affect the circulatory and nervous systems (causing a risk of seizure). Contains sucrose. Do not take if you are fructose-intolerant, or have glucose-galactose malabsorption or a sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (these are rare, inherited disorders). Possible side effects Allergic reaction or brief numbness of the tongue are possible but rare. Pregnancy and Breast-Feeding– Use of this medicine during pregnancy is NOT recommended. – You can safely use this medicine if you are breast-feeding.
