Indication of Nicotinell lozenges

Nicotinell mint 2mg is indicated in the treatment of tobacco dependence in order to relieve the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal in subjects wishing to stop their tobacco consumption. Although definitively stopping tobacco consumption is preferable, Nicotinell mint 2mg can be used in: - cases where a smoker is temporarily abstaining from smoking, - a smoking reduction strategy as a step towards definitive cessation .

Administration mode

Oral route.

Patients should stop smoking completely during treatment with this medication. NICOTINELL MINT 2 mg, lozenge is particularly suitable for smokers who are heavily or very heavily dependent on nicotine or who have already failed in an attempt to quit smoking with nicotine replacement.

Dosage of Nicotinell nicotine tablets

If adverse effects occur when using 2 mg tablets, use 1 mg tablets. Suck a tablet each time you feel the urge to smoke. The starting dose is one tablet every 1 to 2 hours. The usual consumption is 8 to 12 tablets per day, and should in no case exceed 15 tablets per day.

Tips for use:

· Suck the tablet until the taste becomes strong, · Then place the tablet between the gum and the cheek, · Start sucking the tablet again when the taste has faded, · This process will be adapted individually and should be repeated until the tablet has completely dissolved (approximately 30 minutes).

The duration of treatment is individual

Normally, this treatment should last at least 3 months. After 3 months, the subject gradually reduces the number of tablets or can switch to 1 mg tablets and then gradually reduce the number of tablets. Treatment is stopped when consumption is reduced to 1 or 2 tablets per day. It is generally recommended not to use lozenges beyond 6 months. However, some ex-smokers may need longer treatment to avoid relapse. Patients who have used a nicotine substitute for more than 9 months are advised to seek advice from a healthcare professional. Advice from a health professional can help smokers quit smoking. Taking acidic drinks such as coffee or soda can reduce the absorption of nicotine through the oral mucosa. These drinks should be avoided within 15 minutes before taking the lozenge. Children and adolescents: NICOTINELL MINT 2 mg, lozenge should not be administered to subjects under 18 years of age without medical advice. There is no experience with the administration of this medicine to adolescents under 18 years of age.

Complete smoking cessation with Nicotinell

Treatment for nicotine addiction is usually done in 2 phases. 1st phase: Take 1 tablet each time the urge to smoke appears. The number of lozenges dosed at 2 mg is generally 8 to 12 per day and should in no case exceed 30 tablets per day. The duration of this phase is approximately 3 months, but may vary depending on individual response. 2nd phase: When the desire to smoke is completely overcome, gradually reduce the number of tablets per day. Treatment will be stopped when consumption is reduced to 1 to 2 tablets per day or even the transition to 1mg. It is recommended not to use the tablets beyond 12 months. If during your treatment you continue to feel irrepressible desires to smoke or if your treatment has failed, CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR. He may advise you to combine NICOTINELL MINT 2 mg chewing gum with a form delivering nicotine throughout the day: NICOTINELL transdermal devices or Niquitin Patches

Temporary abstinence from tobacco and use of Nicotinell

Suck a tablet every time the urge to smoke appears. The number of tablets dosed at 2 mg is generally 8 to 12 tablets per day and should in no case exceed 30 tablets per day. Reducing tobacco consumption Where possible, alternate between nicotine tablets and cigarettes. Reducing tobacco consumption should gradually lead you to completely stop smoking. This discontinuation should be attempted as soon as possible within 6 months following the start of treatment. If, beyond 9 months after the start of treatment, the attempt to completely stop smoking has failed, it is recommended to seek advice from a health professional. It is recommended not to use the tablets beyond 12 months. To increase the chances of success in completely stopping smoking, it is important to aim for a reduction of more than 50% in consumption during this reduction phase. Nicotinell tablets help to achieve this objective before definitively stopping smoking.

In case of recent myocardial infarction, unstable or worsening angina (including Prinzmetal's angina), severe heart rhythm disturbance, unstable high blood pressure or recent stroke, it is appropriate to always first recommend completely stopping tobacco consumption without nicotine replacement therapy. If this fails in these smokers, the use of NICOTINELL lozenges should be considered; however, as clinical safety data in these patients are limited, treatment initiation should only be done under medical supervision. Use NICOTINELL lozenges with caution in patients with hypertension, stable angina, cerebrovascular disorder, occlusive peripheral arterial disease, heart failure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or pheochromocytoma, or severe hepatic or renal impairment . In these patients, complete cessation of tobacco consumption, without nicotine replacement therapy, should first be recommended. Swallowed nicotine may exacerbate symptoms in people with esophagitis, oral or pharyngeal inflammation, gastritis or gastric ulcer. The doses of nicotine tolerated in adult smokers can cause serious or even fatal poisoning in young children (see section 4.9). Special warnings related to excipients: The NICOTINELL MINT lozenge contains sweeteners, namely aspartame and maltitol. Pregnancy

It is very important to stop smoking during your pregnancy for you and your child. Treatment with nicotine substitutes during pregnancy requires medical advice and monitoring. You must therefore consult the healthcare professional who is following your pregnancy or your usual doctor or even a doctor in a center specializing in smoking cessation.

Breastfeeding

If you smoke a lot and you are not planning to quit smoking, you should not breastfeed your child but resort to artificial breastfeeding. Use of this medication should be avoided while breastfeeding because nicotine passes into breast milk. However, if you want to stop smoking and breastfeed your child, seek advice from your doctor or a doctor at a center specializing in smoking cessation.

Pharmacist’s advice

Switch to 1 mg tablets as soon as you experience side effects like palpitation, redness, warmth and flushing: you are well on your way. Relapse is often due to excessive weight gain, lack of gestures and lack of encouragement from those around you (see tolerance). To avoid gaining weight due to stopping smoking, if you lack the "cigarette" gesture and if you do not know what to do with your hands, we advise you to drink a large glass of water, to eat an apple, to exercise and to occupy your hands with a pencil... The apple has the advantage over other fruits of having pectin, a natural appetite suppressant component. Ask those around you not to smoke in your company, at home, in the office or in the car. Knowing how difficult it is for a smoker to quit, those around you who smoke will respect your request.
