Product Indications Recommended for relieving cold in adults and adolescents over 15 years, in particular: – blocked nose, – clear nasal discharge, and – headaches and/or fever. Directions for Use To be taken orally. Swallow whole with liquid (e.g. water, milk or fruit juice). DosageSuitable for adults and adolescents over 15 years. Take 1 tablet, repeating every 6 hours if necessary. Do not take more than 3 tablets per day. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Frequency of DosesLeave at least 4 hours between doses. – If you have serious kidney disease (or have suffered kidney failure), leave at least 8 hours between doses. Packaging This medicine is made as a tablet and sold in packs of 15. Precautions for Use – If you experience purulent nasal discharge, your fever persists or your condition does not improve after 5 days, consult your doctor. – This medicine contains paracetamol. If you suffer from serious liver or kidney disease, you must consult your doctor prior to use. – Use with caution if you are elderly or have a history of constipation, vertigo or urinary disorders. – This medicine may cause drowsiness that can be aggravated by alcohol. It is preferable to start the treatment in the evening and to avoid alcoholic drinks, as well as medicines containing alcohol, throughout the course of treatment. Warnings – Keep out of reach of children. – Do not exceed the recommended dose or length of treatment (5 days). – In case of overdose or accidental excessive dose, seek medical advice immediately. – Like many other medicines, this medicine contains paracetamol. Due to risk of exceeding the recommended dose (see section titled "Dosage" above), do not take this medicine at the same time as any others that contain paracetamol. – If, while using this medicine, you feel that your heart rate is accelerated, or you experience palpitations, headache (including aggravation of existing headache), nausea or behavioural changes, discontinue treatment and seek medical advice immediately. Consult your doctor prior to use if you have: – high blood pressure; – heart conditions or hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid gland); – personality disorder; or – diabetes. Consult your doctor prior to use if you are currently taking: – a selective MAO-A inhibitor (e.g. moclobemide, toloxatone); or – a medicine containing a Claviceps purpurea alkaloid, e.g.: –– dopamine agonists (e.g. bromocriptine, cabergoline, lisuride or pergolide), such as anti-parkinson agents; or –– vasoconstrictors (e.g. ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, methylergometrine or methysergide), such as anti-migraine drugs; or – linezolid. Contra-indications Do NOT use: – if you are allergic to any of this medicine's ingredients; – if you are under 15. – if you have a history of stroke; – if you have very high blood pressure, or unstable blood pressure due to medical treatment; – if you suffer from serious heart disease (e.g. coronary heart disease); – if you have certain types of glaucomas (increases in fluid pressure in the eye); – if you have difficulty passing urine (e.g. due to prostate problems); – if you have a history of convulsions (recent or non-recent); – (due to the presence of paracetamol) if you have serious liver or kidney disease; – if you are currently breast-feeding; – in association with selective MAO-A inhibitors (due to the risk of paroxysmal hypertension and potentially fatal hyperthermia); – in association with other indirect-acting sympathomimetic drugs, e.g. vasoconstrictors designed to unblock the nose, administered orally or via the nose – such as phenylephrine (a.k.a. neosynephrine), pseudoephedrine, ephedrine and methylphenidate – due to the risk of vasoconstriction and/or elevated blood pressure; – in association with alpha-type sympathomimetic drugs, e.g. vasoconstrictors designed to unblock the nose, administered orally or via the nose – such as etilefrine, midodrine, naphazoline, oxymetazoline, phenylephrine (a.k.a. neosynephrine), synephrine, tetryzoline, tuaminoheptane, and tymazoline – due to the risk of vasoconstriction and/or elevated blood pressure. Combining decongestants is inadvisable regardless of the method of administration (whether oral or nasal) – it is dangerous, offers no health benefits and is effectively drug misuse. Using with Other MedicinesIf you are currently taking, or have recently taken other medicines (including non-prescription medicines), consult your doctor or pharmacist prior to use. This medicine contains pseudoephedrine (a vasoconstrictor). It must NOT be combined with: – other vasoconstrictors, administered either orally or via the nose; e.g. phenylephrine (a.k.a. neosynephrine), pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, methylphenidate, etilefrine, midodrine, naphazoline, oxymetazoline, synephrine, tetryzoline, tuaminoheptane, and tymazoline; or – non-selective MAO-A inhibitors; e.g. iproniazid. You are advised not to use this medicine if you have recently been treated with: – a selective MAO-A inhibitor (commonly prescribed for depression); – other dopamine agonists or vasoconstrictors; e.g. bromocriptine, cabergoline, lisuride, pergolide or ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, methylergometrine or methysergide (commonly prescribed for certain neurological or endocrine disorders, as well as migraines); or – linezolid. Do not consume alcohol or any take medicines containing alcohol while using this medicine. Inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine if they recommend a blood sugar or blood uric acid level test. To avoid risk of overdose, do not, unless instructed by your doctor, combine this medicine with other medicines containing vasoconstrictors, or with paracetamol or antihistamines. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If you are pregnant or breast-feedingPregnancyYou are advised NOT to take this medicine during pregnancy. Breast-feedingSince this medicine may be harmful to your baby's health, you are strongly advised NOT to take it while breast-feeding. Possible Side Effects As with all medicines, Actifed Cold Relief tablets may have one or more undesirable effects on the body. Some people are more resistant than others. Potential adverse effects are listed below: Due to the presence of pseudoephedrine, general effects such as: – headache, stroke; – palpitations, elevated blood pressure, myocardial infarction, sweating, behavioural disorders, nausea, vomiting; or – acute glaucoma (in vulnerable users), which may be signalled by reddening or pain in the eyes. If you experience any of the above, discontinue treatment and consult your doctor immediately. Other potential adverse effects include: – signs of allergy; – problems with urination (e.g. producing significantly less urine than normal, difficulty passing urine); – dry mouth; – convulsions, hallucinations, restlessness, behavioural disorders or insomnia (particularly in children); – memory problems or poor concentration, confusion, disorientation (more common in the elderly); – lack of physical co-ordination, shaking; – drowsiness, reduced alertness (particularly at the start of treatment); – allergic reaction, in the form of: –– skin problems (e.g. rash, itching, hives or eczema); –– Quincke's oedema (characterised by facial and neck swelling, which may cause breathing difficulties); or –– anaphylactic shock (severe, violent allergic reaction). – drop in blood pressure that occurs while moving to stand up (possibly accompanied by disorientation); or – in very rare cases, haemorrhagic stroke (reported in those also taking medicines containing vasoconstrictors, especially in cases of excessive dose, or disregard for contra-indications or warnings; as well as in those with weak cardiovascular systems).
