Product Description Dulcolax (Bisacodyl 5mg) Tablets can be used to relieve occasional, short-term constipation. They stimulate the inner workings of the intestines to revive digestion. Constipation can cause dilation of the rectal veins, increasing the risk of haemorrhoids (piles). It is also one of the most common causes of anal fissures. Directions for Use To be swallowed whole with water. Do not chew. Vomiting or stomach pumping immediately after consumption of Dulcolax is likely to minimise or prevent passage of the medicine into the bloodstream. Dosage– Adults: Take a maximum of 2 tablets a day. – Children over 6 years: Only if prescribed by your doctor. Take 1 tablet a day for 2 to 10 days. Take Dulcolax either in the evening (in which case it will take effect after 10 hours) or in the morning on an empty stomach (in which case it will take effect after 5 hours). This medicine is sold for your personal use only, to treat a specific medical complaint. It must not be used for any purpose other than pain relief, nor should it be supplied to anyone else. Length of TreatmentDo not use for an extended period. Do NOT use for more than 10 days unless recommended by your doctor. Ingredients Per tablet: Active Ingredient: Bisacodyl – 5.0 mg Other Ingredients: Lactose monohydrate, anhydrous corn starch, soluble starch, glycerol (85%), magnesium stearate Coating: Magnesium stearate, sucrose, gum arabic, titanium dioxide, talc, macrogol 1000, EUDRAGIT® L 100, EUDRAGIT® S 100, castor oil, yellow iron oxide, white beeswax, carnauba wax, shellac Packaging This medicine is produced as a coated, gastro-resistant tablet and and sold in packs of 30. Precautions for Use Regular use of Dulcolax may cause: – dependence or addiction; – severe bowel problems; and – loss of mineral salts, including conditions such as hypokalaemia (abnormally low blood-potassium level), which may cause irregular heartbeat. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Dulcolax may interact harmfully with medicines that may cause torsades de pointes (a type of abnormal heart rhythm). – Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking corticosteroids (except if they are being used topically), diuretics or medicines containing digoxin or digitoxin (cardiac glycosides), or amphotericin B. Some users have been known to feel dizzy or faint during bowel movements. About Constipation: Types Occasional ConstipationWhen it occurs in infrequent bouts, constipation may be caused by recent changes in scenery (e.g. because you've been travelling). In these case, medication can be useful if used for a brief period. Recent constipation that cannot be explained by lifestyle changes, or which is accompanied by pain, fever or bloating, should be checked by your doctor. Chronic ConstipationDo NOT use Dulcolax or any other laxative to treat long-term constipation. Persistent constipation may be caused by: – bowel disease, which must be checked by your doctor; or – an upset in regular bowel function due to diet or lifestyle. Possible treatments include: – eating more plant and plant-based foods (e.g. fresh and raw vegetables, wholemeal bread and fruit); – drinking more water and fruit juice; – getting more physical exercise (e.g. by walking or playing sport); and – re-training the defecation reflex. Constipation in ChildrenTreatment of constipation in children focuses on lifestyle and dietary modification – in particular, adding the correct quantity of water to baby milk, eating plenty of vegetables and supplementing the diet with fruit juice. Do NOT use Dulcolax or any other laxative to treat constipation in children. (Regular use of laxatives during youth can cause dysfunction of the defecation reflex.) Contains lactose and sucrose. Do not take if you are galactosemic, fructose-intolerant, or have glucose-galactose malabsorption or a sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (these are rare, inherited disorders). Contains castor oil. May cause digestive problems (such as diarrhoea or a mild laxative effect). Contra-indications Do NOT: – use if you are allergic to any of this medicine's ingredients; – use if you are severely dehydrated (particularly if you are elderly); – give to children under 6; – use if you have certain intestinal diseases (enteritis, colitis or other inflammation); – use if you are experiencing abdominal pain of unknown cause (this may indicate a more serious problem); or – use to treat chronic constipation. In general, should not be used in association with amiodarone, bretylium, disopyramide, quinidine-derived agents, sotalol, astemizole, bepridil, erythromicin IV, halofantrine, pentamidine, sultopride, terfenadine or vincamine unless recommended by your doctor. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Constipation can sometimes be triggered by stress and may cause stomach pain. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding:– Do NOT use this medicine. – Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any form of medicine.
