Botany specifications
A grassy plant found in hot and humid regions of Indonesia, the Citronella has clumps of banded leaves reaching 1.5m in height. Its acidic fragrance is similar to that of lemon balm.
Use
Diffusion +++, Bath ++, Massage +++, Orally +
Ambient setting: on its own or in a mixture by regular low heat evaporation.
Atmospheric diffusion: in a mixture from a diffuser by spraying.
Dermal application: diluting, 5-30% in vegetable oil.
Orally: diluted with some vegetable oil and combined with another essential oil. Only after medical consent. 1 drop 2-3 times per day.
Steam Inhalation: not recommended
Practical advice
Pains : To help relieve painful joints: mix the citronella essential oil diluted to 20% in calophyll vegetable oil and apply onto the painful areas.
Insect bites : To chase away mosquitoes: put 20 drops of Java citronella EO into a diffuser and diffuse for 5-10 minutes per hour. Outside: put a few drops onto your clothes or hat, or dilute the oil in sweet almond vegetable oil and apply onto the arms and legs (avoid the face).
Contraindication
Diffusion & dermal application: for adults and children older than 7 years old. Orally: only for adults. Not recommended for pregnant or breast feeding women. Risk of skin irritation.
